Water Activity &
Moisture Content

Water Activity

Water activity is a measure of water vapor emission. It is reported as a ratio of the vapor pressure of a cannabis sample divided by the vapor pressure of pure water at the same temperature (Aw). Water activity analysis is valuable, because the relative water activity of a sample determines the likelihood of microbial growth during storage.

Reporting

According to MRA regulations moisture content (%M) of dry plant material may not exceed 15%. Submitted samples exceeding 15% moisture content are determined to have failed testing. MRA guidelines require non-edible cannabis products have a water activity (Aw) level ≤ 0.65 Aw and edible cannabis products have a water activity level ≤0.85 Aw. Submitted samples exceeding MRA recommended water activity levels are determined to have failed testing.
